Francis Clalin, a mother of 3, wanted be alongside her husband and fight for the Union Army during the Civil War. But she couldn’t. Because she was female.

So Francis dressed as a man and became known to others as Jack Williams. Jack fought in 18 battles, was wounded 3 times, and was taken prisoner once.
