Alexander Graham Bell understood that teenage boys who were employed as telephone operators were not a good fit for the job. They were impatient and rude.

So he hired Emma Nutt, who in 1878 became the first female telephone operator in the U.S.

Emma “was patient and savvy, her voice cultured and soothing.” She did so well that she set the standard for the profession. “By the end of the 1880s, the job had become an exclusively female trade.”
